Weight Loss Tips

The Pic That Started It All, Gaz @ 34 Stone

1: The most simple tip to lose weight EVER is “Eat less and move more” – Common sense I know but it’s what every single weight loss plan is based on, TRUST ME !

2: Control the AMOUNT you eat at each meal time  – make sure your meals are low in fat. This is not set in stone for instance you might want to also think about calories or portion control.

3: Get weighed –  Measure your body, hips, thighes, chest, arms, neck……what can be measured can be managed. Always weigh-in on the same day in the same clothes on the same scales at the same time of day.

There is no point starting on a weight loss plan unless you get weighed first. This is very important. You need to be able to monitor your progress to know how well you are doing and that any changes in your lifestyle and eating are reaping the rewards or where you are making mistakes.

4 Keep a food diary – write down what you eat and what exercise you have done. Make sure you look at Calories n vs Calories out and try to ensure that Calories out is MORE than Calories in –   If it helps you write down your  feelings.

5, Make a Goal list – write down achievable goals.

If my first ever goal, at 39 stone, was to ride to Blackpool in 3 hours and 10 mins, I would have failed on my journey VERY early on, so my goals were simple ones like tie my shoes, shop in regular stores, as the express train that is the 39 stone cyclist picked up speed and rumbled on, the goals got bigger, harder and more focused, to the point where I can now average 20mph on the bike, I can do “Joel Lane” and not only do I shop at regular stores, I even tie my shoes in them while shopping in the bargain basement section and stuff FITS

:0)

Good luck with your own journey

Hi – please can you tell me the first couple of bikes you started with – I am struggling to find information on bikes that will definitely cope with 20+ stone weight trying to pound the streets!
Thanks, and your site is inspirational, thank you!

Thanks for your comments, at 30 + stone I was on a Giant Yukon 2008 MTB, Then a GT Expert MTB, Then a Trek 6700 MTB, then I worked through Hybrids and now Road Bikes, good luck !

Dear Gaz, very inspirational story, i too over the last 3 months have dropped my weight from cycling from 128 to 118. nothings as strict as your program but i am looking into intensifying this overt the winter months.
my question is when you lost the weight, how did you handle the excess skin as this is slowly becoming a problem.

i was always a big lad and am 33.

Hi Joe

Well done, I’m not so sure how much skin you’d have after a 10 pound loss ??? But I’d suspect that with weight you should be able to help that out

I’ve lost 350pounds & with that came around 20-30pound of excess skin – sadly for the amount I have, the only option is a surgery I can’t afford !

Cycling is more energy efficient than running, therefore, you’ll burn more calories running than cycling over the same distance.

20 09 2010
39stonecyclist

DEAN-O

My point was, I can run 5 miles at 50% Max Heart Rate and then cycle 5 Miles at 95% Max Heart Rate, What would burn more calories ???

Its only as efficient as the amount of effort you pit in 🙂

PS WHY OH WHY WAS THIS POSTED ON THE BIKES PAGE ???? LOL

20 09 2010
Dean

Over the same distance is the important factor to consider. Cycling is enjoyable so people generally cycle for longer, which then evens up the calorific expenditure.

Running is also really good at increasing bone density, which cycling doesn’t address.

Swimming is a brilliant calorie burner and also improves all round muscle tone.

You can see where I’m going with this can’t you 😉

20 09 2010
39stonecyclist

Hummmmm

Swim——-Cycle——Then—– Run you say ???????

Now there an idea 😉

The thing is dean.. if you’re very overweight running is a no go.. its bad for your ankle and knee joints to have 25+ stone pounding down onto them.

Hey there- great going! I lost 2 stone, so erm, less than you did!!! I got into cycling years ago and did 2-3 mile runs only but suffered a horrific accident 2 years back which broke both my arms, a knee and other bits! Since I started cycling again though I have done sportives and was converted from MTB to road bike earlier in the year (Spec Allez Sport), but I plan to buy a Pinarello FP2 in the new year as my rides are now over 50 miles a time (some over 60). The main reason I am writing is to ask whether you use Endomondo (or any other GPS)? I use this to further myself and keep a log of my rides/mileages etc. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

39stonecyclist

Hi there, First off, NEVER EVER Belittle your achievements , 2 stone is 2 stone less than you used to be !!!! so WELL DONE 🙂

Well done for getting back on the bike, while my accident doesnt sound as bad as yours it wasnt something I EVER want to go though again.

I use the Garmin Edge 705, If you can afford, i’d wait for the Edge 800 (6-8 weeks away) if not then the 705 is great.

Thanks, You too !

Hi Gary, What a fantastic achievement!! I have also read Lance’s book and thought it was brilliant, the man is a true inspiration. I am now an ex-rugby player at 6’7″ tall and 19 stone – I packed up at the end of last season because the doc and knees said so and had to do some thing to keep ft and weight down and started cycling. Why oh why didn’t I start years ago?? I started with a 2nd hand Trek T30 Navigator commuter special and started commuting to work (about 9 miles round trip – not far I know but it’s great!) and now have a Specialized Cross Trail LTD Disc via the B2W scheme and I love it. I only got the Specialized late last Oct. and have ridden through the cold and cannot wait for the warmer weather to do lots more of the Sky Rides in and around London and the S. East. The wife has even said I can get a proper road bike next year when I have paid off the Specialized and I can wait to do some sportive’s and such and drop a couple of stone through the spring and summer to get down to about 17 stone. Tell you what though mate, I really admire you and what you have achieved, you have done brilliantly and are an inspiration to many, keep it up and very well done!!

Cheers

Hi Stuart

Thanks for the comment and congratulations of choosing to change your life, its for the better, i know 😀

I ask myself the same question most days, I cant cycling enough, I think how good I would be now, had I done it years ago and I wouldnt have had so many years in my life that were “wasted” due to obesity.

Keep up the good work, hope to hear from you in the future with a bit of an update 😀

Just read your article in the cycling mag & i’m amazed & big congrats bro,
i’m a kidney transplant patiant-fortunately alls going well with me health wise!

i also cycle (mostly for pleasure & never done more than 20 miles at my own pace) i cycle to my local gym do spinning & boxfit class’s, do weights etc etc
i found the article pretty good & def orecognised some parrallels in your approach to your weight loss to the way i look after my health – the hard route that you have took to weight loss rather than a gastric band is fantastic – doctors dont always have the correct answers/route around an issue! hope i make sence :O/ lol

i’ve actually bought a lighter bike to start building up the miles, increase my fitness & loose a bit of weight! i’ll be keeping an eye on your blog gaz-so congrats

is that peugeot bike you have a single speed or fixed wheel either way thats some serious amount of fitness you have built to be riding a single speed bike
theres my aim number 1 :O)

keep it going gaz-superb!

well done thats amazing indeed, like stuart above rugby is/was good but now my knees are buggered and afew other injuries.
have lost about 2 stone by cycling, but would like to ask a few things about comfort ie vibration from the road at 17 stone.
could you recommend a good saddle, grips etc,
what about tyre pressure and tyres? i’m finding because of my weight i need more psi which increase vibration.
p.s well done and keep it up

Wow you really have done awesome. I have lost 6 stone in the last 4 months and weigh around 17.10 now. been looking for a decent bike that will hold my weight and came across your blog. Where would i find one of those giant bikes and what sort of money are they as i don’t have a vast amount.

at 17 stone you can buy any bike you want TBH, you dont need to go for an ultra strong MTB like that Giant

Hi, I am struggling to find information on the 1st Bike you had the Yukon 08 Bike, after getting told by a friend at work about your journey you have taken it has given me inspiration to do more about my size, i have started by losing just over 5 stone but now i want to take the further step and look to purchase a bike like your first started with, could you shed any light as to where i coukd get a bike similer or the same as the Yukon 08 that will take my weight and shed a few stone on the street to aid me in my goals of losing more weight.
Thanks for the boost and kick up the backside i needed, Your an Inspiration !

theres a few on eBay, Item num 250793264172 is one of them, but without knowing your height or where in the country you are is hard to say if its any good for you.

You might struggle to get a 2008 model these days tho, but eBay/Gumtree are you best bet.

I am too heavy and can’t balance a 2 wheel bike, so I recently bought a street elliptical stand up bike…. now I just need to USE the darn think! I came across your story on youtube. I need to lose about 50lbs and for me energy is the biggest problem… Seeing what you have , and continue to do is inspiring, and I will aim to lose the first 10 pounds — and go from there….
Thanks for sharing your story… you must feel like it’s a new life… !
Thanks — if you can do all that… I have to be able to lose 40-50 pounds????

hi gaz, found your story to be inspirational, at 25 stone i’m thinking of taking up cycling. i have a lower back problem so my chiropractor said to avoid drop bars, but flat bars should be fine. with a budget of £700, could you recommend a good bike for that money please?

If I was TOTALLY honest, I’d suggest a Carbon Road bike, but with Flat bars, from China, you could do it for under £700

However, ready made, I had a SCOTT SUB & Ridgeback Velocity, both were very good bikes.

Good luck and keep us updated.

If duget is a huge issue, why not consider walking the weight off ? along with reducing your food intake, it will be just as good as cycling.

Or look for a second hand Giant Yukon, GT or Hardrock MTB.

I’d suggest you look for

Alu 7x frames, or even better, Steel

26″ wheels with 36 or more spokes

I put the word out and 3 people are willing to donate “Bits” of MTB’s including a 20″ frame, disk brakes, I think the only thing left you would need is wheels oh and to build it into a bike

22 05 2011
chris

Gaz
Both yourself and friends are very kind people
My only problem would be that I live in North Kent so the commute would cost me more
than buying a bike.
I cannot ask you and your friends to do anything more than you already have.

So let me get this right, a steel frame and wheels 36 spokes or more, disc brakes
is there anything i need to know about pedals and chain, gears

once again tx for the help

TBH Mate at 26 stone, as long as you dont bunny hop, most MTB’s will be fine, Giant still do the Yukon

Hi Gaz,

What a story, 3 years and a lot of hard work and determination, well done.

I am about to start my journey, I am currently 36 and 25 stone and have just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. I have just started cycling and stumbled across your site and have been having a good read of it, I am sure it will help me a lot.

I have always been big, and can never remember a time when clothes were easy to find and fit properly. I am married and have a great wife, who is really suppotive. We have 2 little boys (sometimes anaimals) and my wife and I are expecting another baby end of April begining of may 2012. I therefore need to saddle up (pun intended) and get moving.

It would be much appreciated if you could share some diet tips with me and what sort of diet you used to lose the weight. I have tried all sorts of diets in the past with little or no sucess.

I am currently managing to cycle 2.3 miles in one go, I would like to go further but by this point my legs are totally burnt out to the point that they are wobbly and feel like lead weights when I get off the bike (I am sure my neighbours must think I am P***** in charge of a bicycle when I get off it). Any tibs you can give to get more distance and less burnout would also be much appreciated.

Look forward to hearing from you,

Craig.

Hi Mate

Congrats on choosing change and good luck

Dont worry too much about what you put in *Providing* you burn more clas than you eat, stick with that simple formula and its hard to go wrong, trust me :0)

Distance comes with time, I started on 1 mile within a month I was upto about 6 miles, within a few months I was at 14 miles, now, there are no limits when I go out.

All the best

I’m desperately trying to find a bike that can take my weight, im about 25-26st ive been looking online for ages now but i get so confused about the bikes/specs people are talking about and im not going to spend that amount of money if when i sit on it its going to buckle.

How did you keep motivated with weight loss? I feel like i’m addicted to food – its just something i have found ‘impossible’ to overcome for many years.. I am desperate to get active again but jogging is out of the question for now.. my ankles etc cannot take it.. and i literally can run about 2metres before i cannot breathe. I really think cycling would be the best first step but trying to find a bike is delaying and depressing me.

30 10 2011

Look to get a MTB from the big Mnft’s (Giant, Spesh, GT, Mongoose etc)

You want a Hard Tail (Never EVER buy a cheap dual suspension type bike, you might as well BURN the money) at 25 stone I was riding a racing bike :0) so a HT MTB ISNT going to break under 25 stone of weight.

Afternoon Gaz,
First of all can I say well done . You really are an inspiration to us all and proof that although we may never climb the alp’s racing against Armstrong or Ulrich we can achieve just as significant feats.

Now for my question / questions what does your daily diet include ?? there is nowhere on the site unless I am mistaken that you can see a typical diet plan or examples of what u ate to loose your weight or was it purly burning off more than you ate ? also how many miles did you increase by on a week by week basis.

The reason for the above questions is after being 20 stone and 6th 4 at 26 years of age . I have decided that enough is enough and tomorrow Monday the 06/02/2012 battle commences .
Look forward to your reply and keep ur excellent posts and blogs coming

39stonecyclist

Hey Ben

Thanks dude, Diet or the details of one, doesnt matter, you just need to consume more calories than you eat, I have found it doesnt matter what it is you eat AS LONG AS you burn it off and then some !

Good luck, keep us updated

i’m 36 and abouit 25-26 stone and just stumbled across this site
and recently decided that i had to do some form of exorcise before i waste away tried the gym but found it too boring and the 20 mile round drive to get there and back was annoying. i work 7 days a week and dont finish till around midnight and its the only 24 hour gym in the city. so decided to do something i used to really enjoy

so i got my old bike back from a neighbour, its a bit old but still a good bike and still big enough for me to ride. the thing is 25 years old and an antique but a bit of oil and some new cables and its good to go. and better than shelling out a small fortune for a bike that can support my weight

th last time i road it i was 12 , and the first time out 25 years on i done half a mile and was ready to die. but second night i managed to do just under 2 miles and felt ok enough to to carry on but thought best to come in a not strain myself.

by night three i got 100 yards down the road and had a puncture turns out the wheels were in a bit a of a state and a spoke went right through the rim as they hadnt been tensioned up for 20 odd years so at the moment the bikes is on the rack till we fix it up.

i’m going to ride around on the old bike till i feel comfortable and my target at the moment is to go right round the town i live (4 miles) with out stopping.

to be honest i’m not really bothered about the weightloss i’m just trying to gain some form of fitness level so i can at least get up the stairs without being out of breathe, i know its going to be a hard journey but at least i’m getting fresh air and having some fun. just keep your fingeres crossed i dont get ran over.

Hello Gaz,

You have been an inspiration to me as I attempt to lose half of the 20+ stone that I need to get rid of. What is your post-ride ritual, if any, with hydration and or food? When I am finished with my rides, I end up being extremely hungry even after eating a meal, but, obviously, I need to watch the amount of calories consumed. Any tips or suggestions?

Thanks so much!

I’m looking at bikes and really like the idea of a road bike and was looking at the boardman team carbon would this bike be ok for my weight or should I look at another bike. Also we’re you conscious of wearing proper cycling clothing when you were heavier. I just think people would look at me and say check that fat b on the bike. Also going to buy a turbo trainer

Nahhhhh never really thought about what other people thought since I got under 30stone , the piss take of some actually drove me on

If avoid a Turbo and find a hill too !!!

I think I’ll use a turbo alot till I build a bit of confidence. What should I set my daily target for in terms of hours or calories burnt

9 07 2012
39stonecyclist

More than you consume

Turbos might well put you off cycling tho mate , I really would avoid for now and just get out there

Gaz, a truly inspirational journey which I am emulating. I started at 27stone 7lbs in August 2011 currently 16stone 6lbs. My chosen five year goal was to compete in a Triathlon. My fist SuperSprint is at the beginning of September this year! It is really good to see your progress and makes me feel my goal is just as achievable. No miracle methods just eat less exercise more. I think a lot of people feel disappointed that it is that simple and just needs motivation and a desire to succeed. My new 5 year goal? An Ironman of course! We’ll see!!

What a great success story, keep on going and I’m sure you will hit the 5year goal

Thanks for that, good to see that you are on the mend now, I cannot believe how good it feels and my only regret is that I didn’t do this years ago. I am actually looking forward to the Tri and subsequent events too. Ironman maybe a bit stupidly hard but I am leaving it as my goal.

I’m flying these days 🙂

I’ve struggled to run owing to arthritis in my hips from the obesity, I set a goal of an iron man but think I’ll just have to accept a triathlon instead 🙂

Again inspired by your story I have started biking to work! It’s only 12 miles but it isn’t flat. My first attempt was 45mins door to door without me being in a heap when I got there! I am considering doing it twice a week?

6 08 2012
39stonecyclist

Well done, what’s wrong with working towards 5 times a week?

🙂

Give me chance man, I am working toward that, won’t be so easy in the winter but by the end of September perhaps I’ll be doing it?

You’re such an inspiration – I
sometimes think the only think standing between me and obesity is my bike, so I’m never gonna stop cycling!

If you’ve got a bike and are obese, then it is all that’s standing between you

Just out of interest, how much would say is a good amount to do per day, one in ride, for someone who is just under 19 stone, and more or less has his diet under control?

3 09 2012
39stonecyclist

As many as you can

Depends on if it’s hilly, type of bike, etc

Just try for a constant improvement

this is really inspiring stuff! Im up to 23 stone and feeling rough as hell so really want to lose weight, also I love cycling and REALLY want to get back on my bike! did you have problems with breathlessness and high heart rate when you first started out cycling and how did you deal with it?

11 02 2013

Just work within your body’s confines, until you can push yourself once light and fitter

Inspiring Gaz, truly inspiring. I am really keen to start cycling again but want to know if this bike would hold my weight (approx 17 stone)

http://www.hargrovescycles.co.uk/products.asp?category=Bikes&product=Via%20Nirone%20Sora%20-%202013%20Road%20Bike#.UUzq37_IYsr

Also, I need pedals but don’t want to go down the clip-in route just yet, can you recommend something nice?

23 03 2013
39stonecyclist

The bike will be fine

As always it’s the wheels to look out for, I think you’d be ok at 17 stone tbh

Hi Gaz
I’ve been following your site for a while. You have given me the confidence to realise that it can be done. Thanks. I was 28 1/2 stone. I have lost 2 stone so far dieting and took the plunge and bought a bike yesterday. I got a hybrid Merida Crossway – seems to hold up tot he strain so far.

I thought it would be an easy way into excersise so decided to ride home from the shop. No idea how to ride In traffic or deal with pedestrains or anything espiecally as i was so slow. I stuck my hand out to go left and nearly fell off.

It got me home from the shop but admit i had to walk about half the 4 miles. It hurt – it hurt a lot and I realise that i’m not a natural cyclist. I will practice around the village until i get some confidence.

Heyho – so today i hurt still but will not give up!

Thanks again

Pabs

Hi Gaz, can’t believe that in the last few years I have tried every diet going but failed to realise the simple truth, eat less burn more. I live a sedatory life now and weigh in at a colossal 25 stone, I can’t quite believe I got here but I have. At 34 years old its really affected my life. I have become stuck in a cycle ( excuse the pun) of becoming depressed at my weight, eating more as a result and getting bigger as a result. Due to this I have regressed into a hermit, disgusted with how I look and ashamed when other people look at me. I am also now afflicted by the onset of diabetes type 2 and the punishing pain of gout as the abuse I have put my body through has finally caught up. I type this in bed unable to walk as my right leg is so painful.

However I have read your blog from start to Finnish and I am motivated, I used to love cycling so as we speak I have just ordered myself a Giant Revel 0.5 online as It seemed half descent at an affordable price. I have also bought some roof bars and a carrier for my car so i can start off cycling away from people on nice flat paths just to get my confidence back. Then I will go from there. Thanks your site has been the inspiration I needed to get going before I waste my life.

One question I do have is did you suffer from gout at all and if so did the weight loss and better diet see an end to it? Thanks again

28 08 2013
39stonecyclist

Gout was one thing I did suffer with so can’t help you there, sorry

I have to say tho, hearing you have gotten a bike for reading my story and you’ve picked up a determination to change your life is absolutely amazing, it’s totally inspiring to me, to hear that I can help someone else

Please please do let us know how you get on buddy

Hi Gaz,
6 weeks ago I decided to make a change, I was 6’2″ and 21.5 stone, less calories and more exercise, I was after a bit of advice though. Over the last 6 weeks I have been out on my bike on the east lancs covering 16 miles at least 3 times a week, other nights 40 mins on the turbo trainer when I can’t get out on the bike, and some kettlebell sessions too. Calorie intake is down to 1800 calories, my issue is that I dropped 7 pounds in the first couple of weeks and only 1 pound in the last 4 weeks, did you come across this issue? its getting to be demoralising with the amount of effort I am putting in. my goals are set for Manchester Liverpool, Manchester blackpool, and a hell runner for next year. Thanks for your inspiration.

It’s just frustrating that I’m putting all this effort in and not seeing results on the scales. even a pound would be nice. lol… if we get a fine weekend over the next couple of weeks, going to get the wife to drop off me and the bike in Southport and ride back to Newton-le-willows, that’ll be a good challenge and 30 miles to boot. thanks for your blog it’s an inspiration and also taking the time to reply.

Average it out over a few weeks, it will look better that way :0)

I lost on average a stone a month

But……

I could go 7 days without losing a pound from time to time

Hi Gaz, I like your weight loss tips, especially the one about keeping a food diary. It has been proven by researches that this really helps people stay on track with there weight loss goals, because it increases awareness of how much is eaten.
I have also found that taking green coffee bean extract has made my own weight loss goals easier to achieve, especially as my metabolism has slowed as I have aged. Thank you for your inspiring site..

For those guys all asking about which bikes to choose to support the weight, I’m 21.5 stone and got a 2012 Carrera Hybrid from Halfords, it its rock solid, swapped the tyres out for some Schwalbe Marathon Plus which are rated up to my weight, and it’s been fantastic.
