Hey Buddy!
What a fantastic blog! I’m well impressed. As an overweight, unfit, ageing guy myself, I’m following (with some trepidation) in your footsteps.
Inspirational.
Thanks.
Mark
Hey Mark
Thanks for the comment, GOOD Luck, if you need anything, just ask and i’ll do my best to help.
PLEASE Keep us updated
Gaz
Came across your story on the BC website, what you have achieved is remarkable.
Allez Gaz !
Thanks Rich
I Really do appreciate your comments
Gaz
Wow! I have a friend that had the same problem… he lost around 125 pounds but then the moral collapse. now he has regain some but I am doing my best to support him.
Keep going my friend you are the whole world his awaiting you now!
Cheers!
Thanks for the comment Michael, its appreciated
Gaz
i found your blog from your signature link .
well done, you’ve succeeded at a mammoth task and you’ve seen through an armstrong-esque personal challenge. it’s a massive achievement, congratulations.
Thank You
Thank you very very much
Gaz
Awesome stuff, you’re an inspiration to us all.
I found this site through a link on the Bournemouth Daily Echo’s cycling blog.
Thanks Man
Appreciate it, Boutnmouth eh ? Thats a new one on my radar for traffic here.
Happy Holidays
Hey,
You’re a real inspiration. I’ve been gaining weight over the past 7 years and finally decided to do something about it.
I’m eating right and walking a lot but I wanted something else to do as well and I think cycling is it.
Keep up the good work.
JB
Thanks Man
Cycling saved my life, I’d ALWAYS advocate it 🙂
Good Luck
Gaz
you would not think that is the same person in all those photos, for what you have achieved it shows you truly are an incredible human being that shows that anyone can achieve anything in life it seems, well done
Thank you Kevin, your far too kind
Gaz
Thanks, good luck and always happy to provide bike piccys
I’m curious – with that exercise PLUS the fumes from the traffic PLUS the stress, certainly at an early stage, surely your heart attack risk increased?
Did you follow any eating plan eg Raw Food Diet etc?
Missed opportunity: you should have brought out a Fitness Video…for men.
I have gone from having chest pains walking to the loo, to eing able to push my body through pain and suffering for hours and not get any chest pain, Im probs OK in that department 🙂
Missed opportunity ? why missed ? nothing stopping me doing it now ? 🙂
Gaz
True but if you had a clip showing your first cycing efforts then another say 6mths later etc then people could see the transition, even go with you on it whereas if you do it now then you’re klinda the ‘finished article’.
damn yeah, I know, I’ll gain 25 stone, then I can do it :0)
I did once – seriously! – think of doing this i.e. getting incredibly overweight and then making the dvd etc but I didn’t do that because a) I am not famous and b) the health risk (plus the cost of the extra eating…but getting tax relief on doughnuts…hmmmm)
🙂
But!
an idea.
Now you are a bit famous, become a Personal Trainer and use the ‘I did this, look at me’ approach and find someone very overweight and…help them lose weight AND bring out the dvd.
You are your own advertising hoarding!
Plus, even if you fail, everything you do now you can claim against tax!
Someone’s going to make money out of :

I soooooo want to get a job helping and motivating overweight people lose weight.
I took a step on this road yesterday and now its a case of seeing how it develops
Know any production company’s ? 😀
Well funnily enough….I can put you in touch with someone who has been looking to run a business that does deal with overall health, well-being etc etc etc
Send ’em my way 😀

Hi Gary
I came to your blog after seeing the article about you in Cycling Active.
I cycled regularly up until about 8 years ago, not being the smallest of guys before (about 17.5 stone) I’ve now ballooned to just under 24 stone. The strange chest pains and gastric problems have just started and the lethargy has been here for years.
Today I go back out on the bike. Your blog has inspired me to get back out there and to ditch the lifestyle before the lifestyle ditches me…….I might even start blogging 🙂
Thanks Gary
Well done Stuart
I cant begin to tell you how proud of it makes me feel to inspire other people and then for people to come here and tell me about the journey they are about to start, its crazy, really is.
So what I am trying to say, LOL, is thanks very much for coming here and sharing and GOOD LUCK, feel free to stick around and keep us all updated.
Gaz
Hi Gaz, Firstly well done, I think we may have chatted on the CW web site.
Like you I was big, well not your size but 21 1/2 stone, I’m now about 13 stone and cycling up to 300 miles a week!
My weight gain started when I was 11st 4lb (5ft 10″) and was told I was diabetic, over 10 years I ballooned up to 21 1/2 Stone, I was on 1000 units of insulin a day to control it. I was offered a life line of a Gastric Bypass for diabetics, cured my diabetes and gave me an incentive for life.
I did the L2P last year and am doing it again this year but the long way round. If we do it next year then your welcome to join us?
Good luck and keep it up.
Dude WAY TO GO for turning it around like that, Kudos to you, keep it up
My own tribute blog continues…
http://gazzasblogs.blogspot.com/
Really hurts the nuts, cycling though. Prostate seems numb….too much information?
🙂
Did I read a weight gain ?
Sadly, yes. I work from home – it’s difficult to discipline yourself foodwise and not become anal – and unhappy.
However my aim is to a) lose weight and b) get superfit – but (b) not necessarily causing (a).
I don’t think the exercise is going to lose me much weight – but cutting out chocolate, alcohol, biscuits etc will.
The key is to have small objectives. (You do that superbly, here)
And then achieve them.
My weight problem is nothing like yours once was BUT my age makes it more serious, perhaps.
So come on then, what business are you involved in and how’s the career (change?) going using your huge achievement to earn you money?
I bet it damn hard, working from home to get the discipline TBH I’m not sure I could control my weight and work from home …….
I’m not looking to make huge amounts of money, I just want to work in the field of cycling, I love it so much that I want it to become part of every bit of my life, getting qualified as a ride leader is simply the first step on another long ass road.
What brand you do use?
Hi Mary & Gaz,
A year ago I was turned down for removing the excess skin and was advised you could only have the op if you had sores from the loose skin or it was affecting you psychologically, the last bit being the clue.
Go back to your GP and tell them how much it is depressing you and they will refer you to counsellor who will decide.
I have found that 2 years on from the op that at even 51 my skin has shrunk back remarkably with just a small lose bit left of about an inch, my waist now is about 33/34″, apparently the younger you are the greater the chance of it recovering.
HTH
WOW Thanks for the tip, truth be told it IS depressing me, I have an appointment on Thursday, will see what I can do .
thanks again
Mary, it seems like you have already got a willing proposer, I had to do the same thing for when I wanted to come off 6 injections a day and a 1000 units of insulin, the consultant made a special application for funding saying that when it gets his approval it is virtually guaranteed.
Gaz, make sure you shout load and clear about how it is making you depressed, you really need to be shouting from the very top.
Best of luck both of you.
Well, I have my chance at trying to get my point over tomorrow, lets hope It goes well.

Gaz, you are an inspiration. I have known for ages that im obese but i started cycling four weeks ago today, around two weeks ago people started saying “have you lost weight?” so today i took the plunge and weighed myself 23.5 stone…….. Also this be my weight or something with the seat binder?
now that i have started cycling i think there is no going back, one day i hope to get down to around 15/16 stone…..
Warmest regards
Martin
awesome to here mate, well done and keep going, once you have that momentum going, there really is no turning back 😀
Thank you for the response, half my message to you did not come out. I was wondering if you ever had trouble with your seatpost slipping down all the time, as mine is…… I cant keep it at it’s set height for more than say 5 Minutes. So was wondering do you think this could be down to my weight, or the seat binder ( hence the garbled bit in the message).
Kind regards
Martin
I think you have a dodgy seat post bracket, mine ever slipped, even at over 34 stone TBH
OMG, I am so impressed by your weight loss. Great Job!
Thanks very much
Gaz
Well done mate, thats an awesome achievement . That is some discipline
Very kind words Kevin, Thank You.
Gaz
Legend. Fair play to you my friend that’s and phenomenal achievement. Well done. As one cyclist to another, start wearing a helmet ASAP!
Legend ? Who ?
Helmet ? Whats that ? 🙂
Thanks for your comment tho dude 😀
I’m sure its never too late to congratulate u on your amazing achievement so very well done. I myself am 6ft 4inches tall and about 25 stone. I currently hoping and praying that my place of work bring back the cycle2work scheme asap as I’m dying to get back in a bike. As a larger lad (well I’m 30 so not a lad) I worry about what bike to get that wont be destroyed under my weight. Any tips? (The cycle to original scheme is run through halfords so anything they have that u can recomend would be great.. I’m looking at the Krakken)
Again massive well done and if i can do half as well I’ll be prob the happiest I’ve been in some time
Thank you, always appreciate it.
at 25 stone, any none budget, hard tail MTB will be fine for you mate
Good luck and keep us updated
Gaz
What an incredible achievement. It makes my half stone loss and 18 mile a day commute cycle (not cycled in 17 years since a kid), look so paltry. Simply incredible.
Weight is hard to lose, so never say that your own achievements are any less than anyone else’s, well done !!!!!
my auntie told me she met you the other day and told me all about your website so i thought i would check it out , i cant believe how much weight you have lost with your will power you must have the patience of a saint . im 20 stone myself at the moment and ive been dieting for nearly a month , cant wait to loose the weight like yourself u look a lot happier !!!
good luck with your weight loss, trust me, you will be so much more happy
Gaz
Wow, incredible! I’m only looking to loose 3 stone and I was finding it hard enough, but you are a real inspiration! Thanks for writing this, I cant wait to get out on my bike now tonight.
Thank you very much, how did the bike ride go mate ?
Congratulations on your achievement. You are an inspiration to others. Thanks for the blog.
Awesome! As a sportsscientist i’m very proud of you!
Greetings from germany ;)!
Thanks timo 🙂
Gaz
Fantastic result. Followed the same journey myself 2 x’s. Was 145 kgs back in the early 1990’s completed an ironman in 1995 and weighed in at 89 kgs on the day. Recently (December 2008) I weighed back in at 125 kgs, now compete in cycling again at 83 kgs and competed in a UCI tour, 5 days in January 2010.
Remember 50% is exercise and 50% is in the kitchen. Great job you have done.
Truly inspirational. I come from a cycling background, rode nationally, did IM tri’s then my wife died and all I went from winning to having no motivation and weight rocketing. I’ve entered IM Majorca 70.3 next year and you have given this once elite bikie, with all the best coaches, the inspiration he needs to go and do it. Thank you.
Ah, heliums balloons attached to rider and bike = easy weight saving 🙂 (referring last pic…red and white balloons)
Keep up the good work, you’ve made amazing progress!
LOL – Thanks dude
Good work! It proves it can be done. 🙂
Thanks dude
Absolute class story pal. Werneth Low ain’t the easiest to get up from either side 😉
Not easy sure but bloody worth it :0)

Gary this is an amazing story. I’m a GP and a veteran (in several senses of the word!) of about 6 Etapes & 3 Marmottes etc. etc. but I have never seen anyone, fellow cyclist or patient, achieve the transformation that you have. Well done, you’re a real inspiration and I’ll be using your story to try and get a few more bunters out there onto the road!
Thanks Doc
I’m glad you are impressed and together, maybe we can inspire some of your patient’s to follow my lead and get out there and fix the problem on the road ?
It inspires me to think that if someone came tosee you for tips on weight loss that you would suggest a visit here TBH
Any plans on any further Etapes ?
Gaz
Probably a Gran Fondo next year – waiting to see what our bunch will be up to.
Sounds good to me :0)
Two Words, JUST FANTASTIC.
2 more, Thank You :0)
Gaz
I would just like to say what an inspiration you are and well done. I am well impressed its a shame your a Man U fan thats the the one thing you have done badly Ha Ha Jim
We all have our bad points 🙂 LOL
This is a fantastic result! I thought I had done well by getting my weight down from 16st 7onz to 11 stone 12 onz since retiring in June 2010 but your result knocks mine into a cocked hat. Flipping brilliant mate! Well done.
Gary,
Saw this on the CTC site and what a wonderful example of triumph and determination this is.
On a cycling note what advice would you give to those who want to go down a similar path? What should be the starting distances and how should you go about building it up, week by week?
I know everyone is different but it will give me some guide if you could advise on this , please?
cheers
John
Hi John
It really does depend on your starting point
At 35 stone- a mile a day was the best bet for a Week then ramping it up .5 a mile per day after worked well
Let me know and I’ll try and help some more
Gaz
Hi Gary
Just read your article in the MEN. Inspirationall. Do you think i could achieve good results on the gym bikes as wary of road cycling.
Gary
Anyone who eats less and moves more can achieve what I have – it doesn’t matter what instrument you use to help you !
But that said – it’s too easy to ” not ” go to the gym after a long , hard day at work
Where as if you cycle to work , then you can’t say at the end if the day that you ” can’t be bothered ” if you still need to get home!
Either way I wish you the best of luck
Hi Gary
my plan was to start with 10 mile a day for a week and then step it up each week. I eat quite well but my problem is I can’t stand going to the gym. I, therefore, do no exercise. What I want to know is , will that be a good start?
cheers
John
Bloody eck !10 miles a day to start would be really good
Go for it if you believe you can manage !!
I’ll give it a go and if I can’t reach that immediately I’ll set that as a first target. Thanks for your kind word, Gary.
cheers
John
Your welcome dude , good luck & keep us updated
hi gary
well done on the weight loss, only problem now is you fit the man utd shirt.when it may not be the shirt to wear after sunday, lol.once again well done on the weight loss.
Are we a bitter-blue-nosed-bertie ???
:0)
no. lol.i”m a claret & blue from turf moor.so no axe to grind with you big boys.it was just my attempt at a joke.sorry.
Ahhh a Dingle LOL
Being fromTodmorden ive spent many a night at Turf Moor.
Hi Gaz,
A great story forwarded by a friend and hopefully will inspire me to get off my ass a bit more. I have just bought a new road bike and really enjoy mountain biking aswell.
I struggle off road in particular due to my weight (currently 138KG) and lack of CV fitness.
I also aspire to find some road gear that will actually fit, but hopefully as I get smaller that will be possible.
Did you have any particular training regime, or just cycle as and when you could?
Mr-T
Hi mate
Congratulations and choosing to change
My training routine can be found here
Let me know of that helps ? I’ve followed that from day 1 ( but increased the length and difficulty as I’ve gotten fitter and slimmer )
Aero tech are good for larger cycling jerseys . Hot up a google search :0)
Gaz
Thanks for the reply, just had a chance to read the whole story etc after looking briefly at work earlier.
I will do some googling for Aero tech, thanks for the tip, I bought some Pearl Izumi stuff in the USA a couple of weeks ago that kind of fits although I decided I look like Giant Haystacks in the bib shorts. 🙂
I think the turbo trainer may be the best option in the winter for me as I can’t really commute to work as one of the places I go every other day is 65 miles away.
Once again congratulations and I will let you know how I get on.
65 miles is a good commuate mate :0)
Turbo’s are good for winter/recovering from injurys but can turn into a borefest TBH……its good to get you going for sure but long term set your target on that 65 miler, it might seem like a dream now, but alll dreams CAN come true !
Good Luck !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The other office is only 10 miles which is easily cycle able. The weather plus stuff to take to work and back are the pain (laptop etc etc). It is Monday Office A, Tues B, Weds A, etc etc.
Weds Cycle to office A will be the aim.
I’m pullin yer leg dude
I started with just one mile followed by a 45 min sleep :0)
Take baby steps but make them grow into giant strides and you will be fine
Good luck
Gaz
before i seen u was seeing a GP about excess skin did you ever get this looked at or sorted?
Hi mate
Sadly not, my GP/PCT said the funding is not there to help me with it.
thats a shame is there any other methods they have said that can reduce the skin? or is it just a matter of time through exercise?
Sadly, with the amount I have, the only option for me, is surgery and I cant afford it via Private means (£10-£15k)
But I’ll keep up hope !
Wow what an amazing guy well done gaz . A true inspiration to us all I nw want some of ur determination to do what I need to do and motivation well done
hi i have a lot of weight to lose what bike is sutable thanks
Hi David
I posted this last week
It’s a rouge guide but will give you an idea of bike type of bikes can take what weight for you to then chose from.
I’m happy to help further if you want to give more details (weight, goal weight, type of cycling you want to try, area you live in such as hilly, flat, busy roads etc etc etc)
Gaz
hi im 35 stone my goal weight is 20 stone type of cycling is off road nothing to heavy though, i will be riding on roads tracks and there are some steep hills. i have been on a few rides about 18 mile long but the bike i have is no good having trouble with the wheel bearings and spokes. i sed to ride a lot before i put the weight on but not sure what bike will be best anymore thanks
At that weight, your looking for a Giant Yukon, Mongoose, Rockhopper, GT etc bike, New they will set you back around £300-£400
Used half that (Approx of course)
Good luck and keep us updated
amazing…….wish i had ur willpower…alex M
Thanks but im nothing special, anyone can muster the will power to do what I did, if they want it enough
an amazing feat; willpower, determination and hard work. very impressed.
Thanks very much
Awsome work Gary – you are a proper inspiration for 2012.
Thanks Jim :0)
excellent post I’m a big cycling enthusiast from Denmark
Hi mate,
firstly, i wanna say a big congratulations on all you’ve done so far, and i hope you achieve all your goals in 2012!
the only thing that worries me is that in some of your photos (esp. in recent ones) you aren’t wearing a helmet whilst cycling. Having read what you’ve gone through, it’d be a great shame to see it all go pear shaped (touch wood though).
also, i think it might be nice to make a page on here showing the bike’s you’ve owned? 🙂
keep up the good work!
Hey Doc
As helmets off little/no protection over 16 mph and I tend to average 18mph, there is little point in me wearing one
HOWEVER as I now have a snazzy helmet camera, since the start of 2012 I have been wearing a helmet every day
re the bikes, I did have a page , it was a prtty long page tho LOL
:0)
Dude, you are f*****g awesome.
Far too kind 🙂
On one of the pixs you was using a bike trainer, i have thought of one for my MTB but was unsure if i have to replace the back wheel as its the old nut kind not the quick release is it best with the quick release system or do u think the nut kind would be ok? and well done on all your doing atm
You might be OK. Be’s try thing to do is take a ride to your local bike shit and have a go at hooking it up there:)
Well done only problem the man utd shirts lol ha am from Leeds ha and way 30 stone ish how did you go about weighing yourself cause I struggle to keep track without weighing myself say 1time a month????
Leeds scum: -)
only joking, regarding weighing, in the early sagacity couldn’t, the best scales I got were only upto 28 stone, so I took pictures and started my blog as a way to upload them and watch my progress, it’s now grown into what you see Today
All the best
Your transformation is truly amazing and inspiring! I look forward to reading more of your blog and following you on your journey. Blessings!
You are inspiring hundreds of people. Its amazing what can be achieved with some dedication. Brilliant story and good luck being that front rider! Love the comment you made about when you cycle to work at the end of the day there is no escape from the ride home! Sooo true! Where as with a gym you can just not be arsed. All the best.
amazing. and on a bike (I own four and they keep me sane).
A truly amazing story , one that gives hope.
You made my day.
Awesome to hear, thanks
Wow, a truly inspirational story. It took real guts and determination to achieve what you did. Here’s hoping it inspires many others to take up cycling. Personally, I love my road bike. A 30 mile bike ride beats going to the gym any day!
Thanks man
Why would you have a cardboard cut out of yourself?
Ever heard about modesty?
its called a photo shoot, ever heard of triumph in the face of adversity ?
Of course. just wondering about the cardboard cut out!!! I think its absolutely amazing that you didn’t give up and finally acheived your goal. What is your diet plan?
Eat less than I burn off
Hi Gaz,
I’m not even sure how I happened upon your blog, but I’m SO glad that I did. I was likely searching for “weight loss – bicycle” as I have come back from the brink of immobilizing obesity myself and recently re-discovered my bike. I bookmarked your page a couple months ago so that I could come and read it when I had more time, and here I am.
As so many have stated above, you are such an inspiration! I thank you for stepping up to tell your story and serve as a glowing example of what a person can achieve when they take steps in the right direction and accept that it will take time, dedication and hard work. I have lost over 130 pounds (started at 415lbs… dear God!). I’m still a fat , but I’m a fitter fat and I’m on my way toward just plain fit.
I can’t describe the love and passion that I’ve discovered for my bike. I’m planning out cycle tours in various countries and reading as much as I can about cycling. I can see myself someday as a fit 90+ year old riding my bike daily, and that tickles me pink!
I will continue to peruse your site and look very forward to learning more about your experience so that I might enhance my own.
Warmest regards,
Chris

Superb to hear Chris
I really hope you do well and that my blog helps you along your weight-loss-way
Ooh Chap! {{{Big Hug}}} U’ve done good – Keep Happy Healthy & free from blisters.LOL
Hello there;
i don´t know if this blog is active or not so no idea if you will get these comments. Firstly, may I say “hats off” to you. I have been fighting weight for years too, and have recently decided to return to cycling after a gap of twenty or more years. i had topped out at about 107kg and since cycling more actively have forced this down to 94kg over about four months. No as epic as yourself, but I am still trying. Came across this blog while searching for a opinion on Ribble Audax. I am riding a lightish cross bike at present, which is ok through forests but as i am increasing the distances and topping out at about 250km per week, I feel that a 26 inch wheel is too much of a drag, so your comments on the Ribble appreciated.
Cheers
Adam, eastern Bohemia.
Hi Adam
Sure is active, good luck dude!
Love your blog – Stumbled across it searching for Ribble Audax trying to decide if I should cycle to work to get fit. Think I need to stop making excuses and get out there! Best wishes.
Good luck and the Ribble audax is a great bike
That’s a stupendous weight loss story Gaz, well done! Found you through the Cyclescheme C7 page. Mine isn’t anywhere near as impressive but hopefully I’m getting there!
I got an Orange hardtail MTB through Cyclescheme a year and a half ago, weighing in at ~20st, after my fiancee’s dad who was a superfit Yorkshireman passed away of a heart attack. I commute ~6 miles each way 4 days a week and have got myself up to doing 30-35 mixed off road and towpath miles on the hardtail on weekend rides. About a month ago I picked up my first ever road bike a Trek 1.1, having always been a BMXer and MTB rider as a kid and teenager, and last weekend I did my first 52 miler from Nottingham to Mansfield and back. I’m also doing a 36 mile off road bike ride for British Heart Foundation up in Sherwood Forest in November. I’m now down to 17st 8lbs, it’s started dropping off more rapidly since I picked up the road bike and I’m a damn sight fitter than I’ve been in sixteen years since I stopped cycling aged 20 – wish I never had!
I had been thinking 15st something was a realistic target as I haven’t weighed that much since I was 21 but after seeing what you’ve achieved I’m inspired! I’m aiming for 12-13st 😀
Only thing I’m a bit worried about is cycling and bikes seem to be becoming an addiction. My roadie mates are trying to get me in in lycra and the LBS are making comments about me ending up working in a bike shop… I don’t know whether to be worried, especially when my mate Jason is telling me I should do the Exmoor Beast with him and priming me with DVDs of the Paris Roubaix, what do you reckon? 😀
Go with the lycra, makes it more comfortable and if you think it’s an addiction now…… :0)
Great story and do keep it up, remember half the battle is keeping the weight off
I’m in a sort of halfway house lycra-denial stage at the moment with cycling shorts and technical t-shirts at the moment. I can see myself caving in soon though 😉
Amen on half the battle being keeping it off, I shifted a load of weight in my mid twenties to get down from 21st 13 down to 16.5, then my gym buddy dropped off the map, I worked antisocial hours at a pub for 3-4 years, lost motivation to go to the gym alone and crept back up by 3 stone odd over 10 years. It’s all too easy to do if you don’t stay on top of it. Getting back into cycling has been more of a permanent lifestyle change and about building exercise into daily life than just the weight loss, though I’m well happy about fitting into my size 40 jeans for the first time in 8 years since I got the road bike – I’ve got three old pairs of 38’s lined up that I haven’t been able to wear since I was 25 that I want to be able to wear comfortably by the time I do the BHF ride in November, that’s my current challenge 😀
Ey up again Gaz, thought I’d stick my head in and let you know how I’ve been getting on. The BHF bike ride is this Sunday coming, I’m down to ~16st 10lbs having lost just over 2st in 13 weeks of training and I’ve achieved my goal of fitting comfortably into my 38″ jeans again! Well chuffed! I’ve now got up to covering ~50 miles in a single ride on both the road bike and the mountain bike so I’m pretty confident for the event. Looking forwards to it! 😀
Superb mate, well bloody done :0)
Let us know how you get on
Cheers Gaz 😀
I had a whale of a time, it was great fun and a brilliant introduction to XC riding events. I managed to do the 36 miles in 3hrs 40mins with a moving time of 3hrs 28mins which I was well chuffed with as I thought I might manage that if it was bone dry and we had cold, muddy conditions all the way round. Plus I didn’t bin it and I didn’t have any punctures on the way round which was a bonus as I saw and heard plenty, especially on the technical parts. I think I was the only rider there in t-shirt and shorts, most of the others were thermalled up to the nines and I got some looks at the start line with thick frost covering everything. Soon warmed up as long as you kept moving though. There are a bunch of pics in the gallery and a full event report on my fundraising page here http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/RichBakerForCharity There’s a great one of my ugly mug covered in mud measles that shows the conditions quite well 😀 The wedding pic with me in the white shirt on the right is from September last year weighing roughly 19 and a half stone-ish. It’s a pretty good illustration of why I needed to do this… I’ve managed to raise a great sum for British Heart Foundation as well which is fantastic! 😀
This week’s post-event weigh-in puts me at 16st 5.5lbs so over 15 weeks training and riding the event I’ve managed to shift 2st 6.5lbs. Just have to keep focussed now and kick on instead of sliding back over Christmas… I’ve got my next challenge lined up but it won’t be until July next year, hopefully I’ll be riding the 100 mile sportive at the Great Nottingham Bike Ride with one of the guys in IT at work. In the meantime there’s a 79 mile challenge on Strava in a week’s time I might have a crack at on the road bike if the November weather holds out… 🙂
Bit of a plug for a local facility: For anyone looking for a trail centre that is good for the inexperienced or *ahem* ever-so-slightly overweight off-roader Sherwood Pines and the trails in the woods around it are great for breaking you into off road riding if you haven’t done it before or you’ve had a long break from it and need easing back in. There is a really good mix of trail difficulties there from the family/novice friendly green route up to the red-graded Kitchener Trail, with some 40 miles of unmarked singletrack to enjoy if you fancy going “off-piste” and linking into loads of other trails running throughout Nottinghamshire. The terrain is mostly loamy/sandy and not very rocky at all so it’s pretty friendly to the bike and yourself if you bin it but can get challenging when you push it faster, with plenty of rooty off camber bits on the red trail. Plus the hills aren’t massive so you’re never too far from a downhill or level stretch to catch your breath. There’s a Go Ape, Segway hire, loads of walks, adventure playgrounds and a nice cafe there as well so it’s good for a day’s visit with the family. The car park is £4 pay & display for the whole day so not too bad.
Rich
I think I’m going to try to work out a nice route that will go from Mansfield Woodhouse railway station, round the Pines and back down to Nottingham through the woods and along bridleways without hitting the roads too much, should be a nice 40-50 miler for a day’s riding 🙂
Hi Gaz,
I was 21.5st about 3 years ago when my now wife and I set the date for our wedding and I thought im not getting married this size and have photos of the happiest day of my life looking like this so I decided to start cycling to work, its only 5 miles each way so 50 miles a week over 5 days and I managed to lose 5 stone in the first year and was 16.5st on my wedding day, since then ive got down to just under 14st and feel amazing.
I just want to say that i find your story so inspirational and it was and still is stories like yours that keep me going, I to have fallen in love with cycling and I have introduced my wife to it now and she’s cycling to work and we are planning a trip from lands end to john o groats when the kids are a little older and can be left for that long.
Well done to you and keep up the hard work
Paul
I recently recovered from a very debilitating unidentified ‘viral infection’ which laid me low in bed for six months and hard unfit times for some months thereafter. The opposite of obese frankly although once my appetite returned and without exercise the weight started coming on!
I needed a form of low impact exercise to get myself back to fitness and decided cycling could be the thing for me. Went and bought a new bike (Boardman Hybrid Pro. My back won’t take to drop handle bars!) and started cycling. I have to say I was amazed at how much fun (albeit bloody hard work!) could be had from just ‘riding a bike’!
I am now well into cycling, joined Sky Ride and British Cycling and go for a good hard ride out 2-3 times a week (retired 58yr old) and absolutely love it. Will be joining my first social ride on 21st October. Started a BC winter fitness programme with a view to joining some sportives in 2013. All is good!
As others have said, you are an inspiration to many others and I hope your success will encourage many others to follow suit and change their lives around.
Take care and thanks’.
Morgan.
Great story, thanks for sharing it us with, glad cycling has taken a hold of you too :0)
Hi there.
You are a inspiration to me. I have just taken advantage of a ‘tax free bike’ though a scheme from work (a hybrid) in an attempt to get a bit fitter (I always thought I was relatively fit doing my job, but there is always room for improvement) or indeed fit. So today, the first time on a bike since I was about 13, I managed a 1.5 mile trip to the shop (slightly hilly I might add), and although slightly out of breath, its a start.
I gather from reading your blog your quite local to myself (Huddersfield), would be nice to (when I am fit enough to even dream about it) join up for a ride.
Thanks once again, Nij
Great to hear, let me know when you’re fit enough, I find it hard to get out other than riding to work but we’ll see
I just came accross your website, Congratulations on a remarkable achievement! I started cycling recently myself (MTB) and lost 4 stone very quickly.
I’m a Mancunian United fan still holding onto my season ticket despite my exile in Kent and the 500 mile round trips.
Have you thought about doing this? http://www.ratracecrossing.com/ I’m tempted but I’d need to lose another 4 stone 😀
Again congratulations, and thanks for sharing your story with the world I’m sure it’s saved many lives other than you own, even if a few of them were blues.
Thanks for your message, that looks amazing :0)
Well done and keep up good work. I weighed 21st but always loved to cycle and have just finished 170m coast to coast for charity. Have recently had WLS surgery which am documenting on my blog if u wanna pop by
Sorry if you’ve already posted this, but just wondering what your current BMI figures are?
24.2
Great, that’s a tremendous achievement:) have you reached your ideal weight? If so have you changed your routines to stabilise? If not have you a BMI/weight you are aiming for?
Its actually 23.2, yes I’m happy where I am, just enjoying life now tbh
Just finished reading your main article & that answers things! I wish you all the best in maintaining your ideal weight & fully understand you enjoying the moment:) I like a lot of other people commenting here, have lost weight with a re-found interest in cycling.. It has to be a lifestyle change for good to maintain things I think:) one last question, when is the book you mention being published?
Cheers Phil
The book will get published when it’s finished :0)
Now I’ve pretty much beaten my last demon (my eating disorder) it won’t take long at all to finish
Loosing weight can be addictive & I would be interested to learn what made you stop at your current weight? Was it the BMI goal or size re clothes of a certain size fitting again? I guess what I am saying is it can be easy to loose a bit too much weight as well… Other people’s goals can help you formulate your own:)
Keep going till your health, happy and have achieved all your goals
Just wondering if you saw this post? …..

Brilliant transformation, I know only to well about it, I’m currently in the motion of getting fit and healthy, I was once 36stone(july2012) and I’m now down to 19stone(nov2012) more to go possibly 3.5 more but it’s good to find your blog here!
Eric Russell-weight loss journey
On Facebook is where you can find how I’m doin,
Massive respect for you, we’ll done
17 stone shed in 4 months???
Ermmmmmm, are you ok?? :0)
Whoops lol I meant July 2011! My bad
Lol, I had concerned you were ill for a second, legendary typo 😉
Joking aside, well freaking done, feels amazing does it not?
It does feel good! There are days when I feel really energetic and days I feel tired, still experimenting with my diet and how my body works, ill be investing in a road bike some time next year, so I’m sure the weight will come off some more, gym, swimming and running for now
Keep your pecker up mate and let us know what happens in the future
Gaz
Will do Gaz! Fatboy slim they call me now!
Legend :0)
So are you
Nahhhhhhhhh. Not at all
If losing 27 stone ain’t legendary status, then I don’t know what is, I’d rather be know as a legend for losing it than putting it on!
It take extra human effort to do what you did, my goal is to lose 21 stone and like you I did it the old fashioned way, blood sweat and tears and sheer dedication and will power,
So when I reach that goal and I’m called a legend, I’ll say “thank you,” and think I might just be!
So should you Gaz,
Never heard if you until two days ago, this weightloss journey can be hard and lonely, I’ve possibly got 3-5 more stone to go depending what I’m comfortable at, but it always nice to find people who are or who has done the same! And that deserves legendary title!
Bravo weight loss brother
Your right, it can be a lonely journey
But once out of the other end, stand tall, be proud
Just put your blog link on my Facebook page great stuff! Lost 4lbs this week! So well chuffed! Are you on Facebook Gaz? Live to speak with you
Thanks dude
Yup I’m on Facebook and twitter @39stonecycist
Well done man, chuffed for ya
Wow, congratulations to all those who are/have lost weight. Sometimes the hardest part is starting the weightloss journey. Many inspirational stories here and it’s good to know that such weight loss IS possible! 🙂
Thanks for the comments
Came across your blog through a magazine link this morning, and am very impressed with the amazing amount of work you have done. I wanted to share that I also started the same transition this year, Im 44, I weighed 110kg, had very high blood pressure, high cholesterol (7+) and a very high heart rate at rest, and decided in May (after the rain stopped !!) to get on my bike and commute 20km per day to work and back, starting at 1 day per week and building up to 5 (occasionally not possible as need to either drop or collect kids from school) otherwise i was also on the wrong path for a long life !.
Im now 91.7kg, (need a new wardrobe of clothes that fit) with a goal to get to my target of 75kg by mid 2013. I’m now cycling between 60 and 130 km per week, yesterday did 36km around Rutland Water, even though its the end of Dec and a boat would have been better on some of the tracks !, I only started being more conscious of diet a month or so ago as I knew winter may slow me down a little, but that hasn’t really been too bad (yet) due to the amazing calorie burn off that cycling brings and the Xmas present of an indoor trainer, I can still do a merge 10km per day in the conservatory.
Keep up the good work…I’m totally addicted now to riding and get annoyed when I have to use the car, I really find it a great way to burn off the calories, and focus the mind, and feel great in doing so.
Your efforts are truly inspirational, and I will share your story with as many people as I can Gary.
well done, thats a superb effort ,keep it up in 2013
ps what magazine did you see me in ?
This is amazing, and very inspirational as I continue my weight loss 🙂
Well done my friend xx
Glad I could help
#teamgaz
Hi Gaz, stunning just stunning, I’m sure the surgery wasn’t easy and was painful but you did it on your own and got there. You sir are to be commended. Good luck in all you do mate :o))
BTW, when is the show on telly or have I missed that bit?
Cheers,
Stuart
Was on last night
Am sure it’ll be on 4od :0)
hi just a question on lose skin i was 37 stone and im now down to 29 stone havent had any lose skin yet dose everyone get it and dose it cot much to get it removed.
Not everyone gets it but you won’t know until your close to goal weight
It costs between £15-25k to have removed
Gaz
wow hope i dont would just have to live with it lol thanks.
Or go on TV lol
This is brilliant, if only more people had the get up and go that you have to change and improve there lives with out invasive gastric surgery.
I have good friend who is about the same size you were in the beginning and he is just starting to work on his weight loss, fingers crossed he will go the same way you have and become a lean cycling machine!
I will forward him the link to your site, I hope he will find it inspirational and proof you can do it!
wondering what your diet was like whilst you were losing weight,
Hi Gaz
I was lucky enough to get WLS in 2007 I am a keen cyclist now and love it a great blog and a fantastic achievement my son has inherited the fat gene I have sent your blog to him for inspiration, keep it up.
Hey bob
Way to go
Hopefully we’ll both inspire him :0)
Great story! How did you get started? Do you mind providing a timeline of your routine and weight loss. It would help getting a good idea how many miles you were riding and how long it took you to lose the weight. You look great, congratulations. This is inspiring a lot of overweight people.
I came here because an overweight friend was saying he is too fat to cycle. He is not even two thirds your starting weight but still a big lad. I hope you will be an inspiration to him.
Will power is not the first thing that would spring to mind seeing someone of 39st, but you have shown astonishing strength of will to achieve what you have. I am very impressed.
Thank you very much
I wish you friend to very best
fantastic blog, well impressed
Thanks Rob
Superstar….well done sir
Thanks Dave

Just phenomenal, utterly amazing…. your perseverance and hard work should be an inspiration to any cyclist large or small.
hats off to you pal. 🙂
Cheers Jim dude
Just come across your story, what a amazing story, I take my hat of to you.
What a inspiration you are to others, I too have taken up cycling in the last year with the intention to lose weight, the results have been great but by no way as your great as your achievements.
Well done, and keep the cycling up.
Thanks Alex and good like n your quest dude.
Gaz
What a brilliant example of what you can do for yourself with a load of determination and a lot of hard work. So inspirational to see what you have achieved. I started running just under 6 months ago after yo-yoing around 5 stone overweight for nearly 10 years. Tried all the half-arsed dieting and looking for a quick fix but am amazed at the difference that getting out there and doing putting in the miles has done. That combined with a healthy balanced diet is all it takes! (Sounds so simple…if only it was that easy to get together the confidence and willpower to actually do it!!) My partner and I both got bikes a couple of weeks ago so this is how I discovered your blog, and if it helps us in the same way as it has you then we are both on to a winner!
Well done 🙂
I am inspired……..I started at 345 lbs and now I am at 296. I hit a lull aand have been edving back up. This remotivates me! I will win as you have done!!!
Thank you!!
John
We’ll done friend, I saw your video on YouTube and came across this blog.
I have also started cycling and daily riding 10km and gradually increasing it.
Can you give some tips on cycling for weight loss, like what to eat, drink.. Best time for cycling etc…
I must say that I don´t know how I came to your blog.Started off looking at the Gretaer manchester cycle and ended up with you. Great story. well done mate. I am from Barcelona, spain, though half mancunian, hence my desire to do the GMC in 2014. Keep the good work going, take care.
Cheers Steve, maybe I’ll see you on the start line?
Hi gaz,
been following you off and on for a couple of years and it’s amazing that I still read or hear people talking about “That guy who was 40-stone or something and took up cycling…etc…” So make no mistake, you’re still inspiring people with all that great work and, let’s face it, sometimes painful effort.
Anyhow, cheers and all the best for 2014. With luck and a weekend pass or two from the missus I’ll be adding some more of the “100 Greatest Climbs” to the 5/100 done so far this year so I’ll look out for you just in case by some miracle our paths cross.
gaz what turbo sessions did you do?
The suffer fest and tacx imagic vr
Gaz, just let me tell you I look up to you, I want to have the success you had, I am a 32 year old man weighting almost 25 stones, already lost 2 in the last 5 weeks and looking forward to reach my goal at 16 stones in the next 13 months, thanks for the inspiration, you are living proof I can do it, I am riding my bike as much as I can and this will help me keep going for miles and miles, thank you.
Awesome to hear, keep on going
You are just so inspirational. Im not as heavy as 39 stone, but Im around 95 kgs, and a woman. I really have struggled losing the weight after having my 2 kids.. but Im gonna be cycling to work from now on! Its about a 9km commute each way, and I drive a massive heavy Japanese “mama charie” bike.
Agree with the poster above – you are living proof I can do it! So I WILL!
You my friend are a True Inspiration… You should enquire about going into schools to tell your story… In February I was 29 stone, and now i’m 25 10. I’ve been dieting and walking and have now followed in your footsteps. I have just bought myself a Falcon Hybrid Mountain Bike to start heading out.. I walk 5 miles quite well now and I’m looking forward to Riding now. Please contact me with tips as i’m scared i’m going to break the bike due to my weight.
Just like to let you know, your story have inspired me..

I completed the Singapore Marathon in 01:13:24 http://www.multisportaustralia.com.au/Home/IndividualResult?clientId=1&raceId=1102&eventId=4&athleteId=446372
Been feeling really crap this afternoon. I bought a cheap pristine Raleigh Silverblade on Gumtree with the aim of riding it to take my daughter to school and back (2 x 2mile trips per day) but I really struggled to even get a full revolution of the pedals. I weigh 21st (i think – I don’t even have scales in the house as they seemed to stop about 18st which was years ago). Anyway after pumping up the tyres as high as i could get them with a handpump they looked rather pancakce like when i was sitting on it and it’s really send me on a downer. I came back in and sulked before googleing and finding your blog. I just wanted to let you know that I am inspired and ready to give it a shot. I only wish I had found your blog before I had a sulk, crappy afternoon, two scones, four bourbons creams and 2 beers. (you get the picture). 🙂
get a track pump :0) and go kill it !!!!!
#fighthard
hi gaz,
Just came accross this and Can I just say.. woah! What an achievement!
thats a very inperational story, congratulations, im following in your tyre tracks so to speak, 4 months ago start weight 21st 3lb, lots of hard work and miles in the saddle, completed the manchester 100mile ride in just over 7hours end of september, current weight 19st 10lb, plenty more to give.
Hi gaz im after advise im cycling around 25 30 miles every over day what I need to know is what kind of food can I snack on for energy while riding and still manage weight loss please advise regards big dave leicester
Well done mate I am seriously impressed , I am 15.5 stone and need to lose 2 stone and am struggling to lose it . For you to lose that amount of weight and show that kind of determination is truly inspiring to us all . What you have achieved is the equivelant of climbing Everest . Well done mate that is one hell of an achievement . I have got some issues to address now and seeing this article on you will help me . Thanks again mate you are the mutz nutz !!! Dave
Read your blog at 23 stone, got on my bike and rapidly reduced to 19 stone, went arse over tit on the road due to my own stupidity, dislocated elbow, triple fracture of the arm and a broken wrist! What a clown.
Can’t wait to get back on bike in March and head for 13 stone, your story has inspired me so much that even my wee mishap is only part of the Journey.
Just came over here from Bikeradar to say that journey was seriously impressive and inspirational. I’m 17st 5lbs at 6foot2 (used to be a bit heavier) and recently got into MTB.
I’m going to have a good read and take some tips from you as I really want to lose a lot more. Good effort lad 🙂
Incredible! I recently took up cycling as well I’d love to know some tips on how you lost it. Was there any diet regulations? Training tips? How long did it take? I’m really inspired. Keep up the good work.
Well I did a random Google search, as I have been training 20 plus years with weights, and I’m really light so wanted to see how I stack up. But I stumbled across this website.
I work in the fitness industry and i wanted to say how impressed i am at your journey of weight loss. What a brilliant achievement my friend.
Paul
Thank you
Hi Dude,
This is a really impressive story – and your determination and grit are inspiring.
I’m very heavy myself now – 350 lbs – but I want to start bicycling. I am 5’10 (shortish). I am looking for a cheapish hybrid bike to start off with.
Do you recommend any make or models? Is there anything specific I should be looking for?
Hope you don’t mind me asking these question.
Cheers,
Alex
I dont specifically suggest brands, I did ask to work with some manufactures but they wasnt up for it, shame really.
My best advice is something with 38 spokes, generally frames are cool with the weight but the wheel are the weak point
Thanks for the tip. I bought a cheap hybrid. If I get into it, I can trade up. Good luck – and keep up the good work. I’ve lost eight pounds this week!
well done !!!!
Hi Gary,
Love looking in now and then to see where you are and where I can go, now down from 23st to 18.7 and completely hooked. I did not realise how addictive cycling is!
Thanks for the inspiration.
glad to have been an inspiration
as a guy who’s weight is currently between 33-36 stone i found this blog after googling for some info on biking after finding this blog it gives me great hope to get on a bike and start riding again i plan on buying a bike next month i used to love riding my bike as a child something i haven’t done since the 18 stone mark because i thought the bike would break real shame i allowed myself to believe that maybe i wouldn’t have packed on all the weight.
Hi Gary!
After getting inspired by you on 11 May 2014.
i have been doing alot..
most recently i completed my first ever Half Marathon!!
Sundown Marathon 2015 (Singapore) on 4 July 2015!

Also managed to climb Japan Mt Fuji overnight under stormy weather on 23July 2015!!
THANK YOU!!
Bloody fantastic! been going for about 5 weeks now I only want to loose a couple of stone,no weight loss yet but getting fitter I’m clocking about 100 miles a week at the moment.I guess I need to look at my diet more closely.
Hello Gaz im in the same boat as you was i am a 22 year old man who weighs 26 stone / 364 Pounds i am looking realistically to get to 11 stone is there any tips on how to get that off thankyou very much and well done for doing what you did 🙂 – Jason
Hi
I’m 30 stone it’s hard to get motovated but I’m using this to try
You have done amazing
I just find it hard to get fit when I’m so Un fit to start with
All the best
Fucking amazing dude!
Amazing!!!! Unbelievable how much weight has dropped of you!! Be proud of what you have accomplished!
I’m 19 stone an can’t stand the sight of the gym it’s so boring and was thinking of starting to cycle to get rid of the weight any insight on what’s the best bike to get?
Thanks in advance!!!
Hello, I am a big bloke, and I am looking to get back into riding a bike. Is there any bikes that you can suggest, Last time I weighed myself, I was 25 stone, but, I imagine, I will be about 30 stone now. But, want to lose it.
**Afterthought** Well impressed by the loss you have gained from biking.
Sir. You did a great joblosing weight. I got a year riding mountain bikes but can’t lose weight because I’m not on a diet. i recently bought a Trek Marlin 6 and after 4 months of use the cassete is to much damaged. Do you have any recommendation about bike components or others that can last? I’m actually weight 280 pounds.
Your weight shouldn’t damage the cassette, what happened?
Hey Gaz
I’m 34 year old male weight 24 stone and my height is 169 cm. That puts my BMI well into the over weight catergory also recently found out I am a type 2 diabetic.
Your achievement is remarkable.
Would really like more info on what you did besides Cycle. Did you have a eating plan? I have two kids 3 and 5 years old and if not for myself then I definitely need to look closer at my health and even better I could reverse the diabetes. I found your blog by chance while searching for bikes for big guys lol. If this blogp still active I’d love to get in contact with you.
Hey buddy, I’ve been away for a while because of disability, I didn’t follow a healthy eating plan, what worked for me (not necessarily you) was to simply eat less kcals than I used
what kind of cycle did you use ? Any physical issues ? I tried the ones locally available, the seats were a pain and gave me shafing in thighs. What kind of diet regulations did you follow ?
See the about Gaz and am I too heavy for a bike pages
What bike did you use
Check out the post “am I too heavy for a bike”
Amazing story. I’m around 380LBs at the moment and I wanna start riding. Is there any advice on what bikes to start with to support my current weight ? I willing to pay anything.
I just joined your blog today I have just started out on a bike after losing 10 stone. If i knew a bike would of taken my weight at 30st 6 and a 1/2 lbs I would of enjoyed losing the weight more. But I’m on my bike now and loving it, I’m 58 and 19st 12lbs still so I have a long journey still. I will read your blog to help me and thank you for your blog. William
